When is roof snow removal necessary?
The maximum weight a roof can support depends on the snow conditions. For fresh snow, 10-12” is equal to 1” of water and weighs approximately 2.3 kg/sq ft. A roof can typically support a maximum of 4 ft of fresh snow. When compacted, 3-5” is equal to 1” of water, and 1” of ice is the same as 12” of fresh snow. Essentially, it’s vital to be mindful of accumulation on the roof – especially of ice.
